My first attempt at smoking meat.
Well I have to say I think my first attempt at smoking turned out pretty good. It received two thumbs up from the family and I enjoyed every moment of cooking and getting it all together. Took about 6 hours: 4 hours smoking, 1 hour wrapped in foil, 1 hour open in foil with bbq sauce.
- Picture 1 : 4 pork tenderloins with 8 or so strips of bacon, salt and pepper.
- Picture 7 : Wrapped pork tenderloin after removing toothpicks added a little apple juice to keep it moist.
- Picture 9 : Opened them up and added Sweet Baby Ray's.
- Picture 11 : They are done.
- Picture 13 : Hickory chips.
- Picture 16 : Dinner is served. Bec added some sweet potatoes from the oven to finish the meal off.
A couple things I learned today...
- You don't need to see the smoke just smell it. Silly me thought a smoker needed to SMOKE.
- Smoking-Meat.com has tons of great info to get started.
- Wrapping the wood in foil is a brilliant way to keep wood together and keep them smoking longer.
- A manual(pdf) from a 25+ year old smoker can be found on the web.
- You can smoke on a gas grill.
- Bacon is great in anything, actually I knew that all along.
